Moral Panic (May 1st – 3rd 2025)

As part of my second Level 5 module at Leeds Arts University, my class put together our own exhibition in East Street Arts studio space in Leeds.
My piece, titled ‘Processing‘, follows the theme of feeling watched and exposed in a way that makes you feel you need to become something worth looking at and worth observing. The work follows on from my project around body language and the Unconscious Mind, how we are constantly watching and understanding what people around us are feeling due to the way they carry themselves. As well as constantly trying to hide how we feel with manipulating body language with a smile, or a certain walk, straighter posture, almost everything we do is a manipulation in some way if we feel we are being observed.
The title ‘Processing’ is a complete reflection on how our brains are always computing and ‘processing’ the world around us. I have painted them with bright colours when they themselves reflect quite upsetting, depressive and anxious states, to act as a deterrent and make them ‘something worth looking at’.
It is my opinion that people are quick to look past work if you are forcing a certain mindset and a particular viewing experience on the audience, whereas giving people something appealing to look at initially makes them want to look further and understand the intentions and why the postures don’t exactly correlate with the colours and how polished they look.
This exhibition was an amazing experience to work behind the scenes in the Logistics team and understand more about the different elements and teamwork that allow something like this to take place!
