The Detached

This piece changed a lot through the process of painting and sanding down the bases. In the ‘before’ photos, it was originally sat up straight with the arms resting on the legs, through time the back has been damaged but I feel this adds a lot more depth to the sculpture and works very well with my original intentions. There is a lot more movement in this piece now which I had aimed for originally and struggled to capture.

The name ‘The Detached’ comes from The piece having a loop of wire in the middle connecting the legs to the upper torso, to reflect the idea of the two being apart, detached. The feeling of a pit in your stomach, a ball of anxiety preventing you from being able to function. Things such as standing up straight, getting a deep breath, eating well, being able to focus on small tasks, all of these things become impossible when you have that pit of fear in your stomach. This piece reflects a lot of different ways to visually present emotions and mental states, therefore being a more successful piece in this series.
