The Aloof

‘The Aloof’ is my tallest sculpture to date. This is used to highlight how people are hiding their personalities behind behaviour such as being ‘aloof’, cool, calm, and collected, in order to fit into social circles and not stick out. Traits such as being tall, lanky, having a strong, determined personality and attitude to life, etc, can cause a lot of unwanted attention and become the main parts people see you for. The elongated limbs are to stand out above other sculptures I want to place this with and give the idea of them slouching, feeling relaxed in the setting with their body language, but their actual body, lanky, tall, broad shoulders, etc, is something they cannot hide.

To be ‘Aloof ‘ means to have seemingly no sense of interest and act highly unbothered by everything in life. This is quite an important example of a defence mechanism against this unwanted attention and feeling the need to blend in to societal norms. I have kept this sculpture the lightest pink possible without it being too skin-like and ‘on the nose’ to show the vulnerability and almost feeling ‘naked’ when people see these elements of you that you have been hiding.
