This is my most successful and favourite piece so far as the techniques are finally resolved and I feel as though there is a lot of improvements from this compared to the first piece I finished. I feel this is the piece that reflects my inspiration from Alberto Giacometti the closest and references his use of elongated limbs. His earlier work was originally intended to be an optical illusion, I have tried to reflect this with the work being thick from the front but paper thin from the side as you turn it.
I feel this is the most successful as I trusted the making process and came into it not having a set result in mind. I have elongated the limbs a lot more here which is very effective and the way the shoulders just cut off and there is no neck is very effective in the idea of the body and soul being completely detached and separate. The emotional portrayal is solely physical, which was my aim with this project.
‘The Nonchalant’ is inferring to how people in society downplay their emotions and how they feel about things. They hide their anxiety, sadness, anger, desperation, etc, all to appear cool, calm and collected. They hide their feelings and don’t express themselves in order to fit in with societal standards and comply to social statuses. The hot pink colour is a complete 360 to the name as pink stands out, it’s bold, it’s loud, it’s obnoxious and it makes you look. Pink is an acquired taste and people feel embarrassed to say they like this colour, therefore painting this particular sculpture pink is important to catch attention, and the name is to make the audience think deeper.
