The Overjoyed

With this sculpture, I wanted to use the colour and the posture to tell two different sides to an emotion. The posture, with the hands in the air, movement in the legs, almost ‘jumping for joy’ depicts the name ‘The Overjoyed’. Meaning static, elated, delighted, euphoric, all of this to show the joy and happiness someone can feel and understand. Being completely and utterly themselves and allowing their happy emotions to come to the surface in such a dramatic way.

On the other hand, I painted this sculpture a very dull purple to show how, although some people feel these emotions and allow them to come out to the surface in such a lovely way, others tone themselves down to fit into certain social circles. Expressing yourself in this way can be seen as embarrassing and vulnerable, most people do not want to be seen as either and therefore hide this side of themselves. The two juxtapose each other in a perfect way as the posture is happy and carefree, yet the colour brings a subtle sadness to the piece that the audience may be able to relate to.
