This is one of the taller sculptures I have done as I wanted to create something that commanded space, attention, and felt daunting to look at. They are physically ‘lying back’ and resting on their hands behind their back. This references the title ‘The Laid Back’ as I enjoy making and titling sculptures in a literal sense. There is a deeper meaning of the negative things reflected in the darker colour but on the surface level, the sculpture is laid back so they are called so. I find it interesting to see how an audience react to this as some will want to find the deeper meaning and not feel satisfied with the surface level title and posture. Then others are content with being told what they are seeing and that is it.
To be ‘laid back’ means to be unemotional, easy going, relaxed, nonchalant, calm, etc. There is a constant fight to upkeep this ‘laid back’ attitude when in reality, he is resting his arms behind him because he is so tired and needs a break from the constant acting and hiding his true emotion when they are supposed to be ‘unemotional’. The dark green reflects this conflict of emotions and the thinner ankles at the base show they are quite unstable and can easy be pushed down if there is too much pressure physically, as well as figuratively.
